The Next New Thing
Someday in the future, an all in one virtual reality platform will be created that simultaneously incorporates file sharing, social networking and online gaming. When I think of virtual reality, I think of Spore, The Sims and SecondLife; games that mimic life, but limit the ways you can participate with the online community. I hope a conglomerate new media technology is created to enable communication and interaction in ways that aren't developed now. Although there's a lot of risk in making an all in one virtual reality, I think it would be neat to be able to do things that need separate apps (now) in one program. I remember watching a Simpsons episode where they showed something similar to what I have in mind- an almost limitless, interactive virtual reality.
If anyone's interested in reading the episode synopsis, I attached a link below:

I wonder if such a reality would lead to a Matrix-style type of existence where people just lay in pods all day and spend as much time away from real life as possible. Or maybe it'll be more like the kind of place described in a video game called "Star Ocean: Till the End of Time" where video games were played using your physical body in a giant room and playing too much in the virtual world would lead to becoming a "muscle head" since it would be the same as working out.
ReplyDeleteI think I saw something similar in an episode of Community actually. What you're describing sounds very technically advanced, and I am wondering what exactly the purpose would be: Fun? Efficiency? Discovery?
ReplyDeleteThose all sound like fun (and somewhat tragic) ways for technology to develop. My hope is that it'll be used for fun, Jacob. A Matrix-style virtual world would be pretty neat to explore, but that kind of existence probably wouldn't be health.
